It Turns Out [VIDEO]

Music Video and Art Film

"Together with the art of photographer Anna Lamberg, Magnus offers an amazing video that is the exact mirror of the ambience lived around the song." - Tracker Magazine

I am very happy to present the music film for It Turns Out. I worked together with photographer and artist Anna Lamberg. The aim was to make a music video that was closer to art, an interpretation of the song in real-time. Together we explored themes like impermanence, chaos, sacrifice and loss coupled with more positive themes like beauty and redemption. We made an early decision to work with water, based on some of the art work I had already done for the Tidal Lock album cover, which has facial features trapped under water covered by seaweed and corals. Anna gave this idea a completely new angle based more on a sense of beauty and emotions sacrificed and being ultimately polluted and lost in gigantic storms, all matched and weighed perfectly with her great sense of colour, contrast and light effects.

We worked for several days in Anna's studio putting together pastes and other ingredients, using sugar, plastics, tensides, paint and plants. With great help from friends and borrowed equipment we managed to put something together on a near zero budget. Who knew sugar and plastic could be so beautiful a combination?

Homemade golden syrup and a view from above after the last shot.

The song was originally planned to be the first song on the coming album Tidal Lock. I wrote it twice, finishing the first segment (in G major) in just a couple of hours during an experiment trying to go from songwriting to a finished production more swiftly, and the second segment (in F minor) a month later when I was rehearsing the first. I later redid the vocal takes with a new microphone. In contrast to many of my other songs I did not end up changing or polishing the lyrics, they are the same as they were coming out during the improvisations. It must sound like such a sad song, but that actually wasn't the intention and it's not how I percieve it myself. This is just how things go sometimes and I need to keep my own truth about this song to myself.

Lyrics:
It turns out
It's not love I can see within me
It turns out
It's not love I can see within me
But I know
That it's love I can see behind your eyelids

It turns out
It's not love I can see within me
It turns out
It's not love I can see within me
But I know
That it's love I can see behind your eyelids

There's a river
And it flows out into nothing
There's a river
And it flows out into nothing

OUT ON SEPTEMBER 8

There are times when I am just so filled with this almost unexplainable energy, welling up inside me without being really aimed at anyone or anything. In this song I try to describe it, and its presence even together with the most hopeless of moods. Throw a light into the ocean!

Lyrics
So where are your winnings
Where are the diamonds in your hand?
I see you in a basement
Walling up for just one man

Take a walk into the open
Scream out loud into the whirlwind
That I was only a kid and
All this shit spilled on me and
Throw a light into the ocean
Throw a light into the ocean
Throw yourself into the open
Aaaah
And I'll be whole

I'm vacant and open
I'm vacant and burning up
Where is that golden sunrise
When we meet and leave the ground

Take a walk into the open
Scream out loud into the whirlwind
That I was only a kid and
All this shit spilled on me and
Throw a light into the ocean
Throw a light into the ocean
Throw yourself into the open
Aaaah
When
Will I be whole?
